NECROPOLIS LA SALATA
Holiday Village Vieste
Camping Village in Puglia
It is the oldest evidence of the arrival of Christianity on the Gargano and Vieste. Its name comes from a source that emerges from the cave, with very pure waters but extremely rich in salt. It is a very important cemetery complex located just 4 km from the Holiday Village, in proximity of Scialmarino beach, better known as Spiaggia Lunga (“long beach”).
This is a natural cave, where tombs have been dug inside the walls and in the ground. Archaeologists have defined this necropolis as the most majestic and suggestive of its kind, of the entire Mediterranean basin, created precisely during the spread of Christianity. “La Salata”, as well as being a remarkable archaeological site , also show geological, botanical and faunistic peculiarities. In fact, two streams of calcareous origin run through the entire area, creating an unique natural environment.
The Salata is accessible only with authorized guides on days and times established by the Municipality of Vieste, to preserve its status.
